EASFAA conf recap and Congrats!

I have a calendar on the wall of my office that features a beach scene each month.  As I turned to June this morning, the photo reminded me so much of Palomino Island, which is the private island for the guests of the El Conquistador Resort. I was fortunate enough to attend the EASFAA conference at the end of May and wanted to report on some highlights.

The conference committee put together a great agenda which was packed with informative sessions ranging from R2T4, Default Prevention, a NASFAA Reauthorization discussion, “Ask a Fed”, Veterans benefits from VONAPP to Shopping Sheet, iPADS in FA Office, and much talk about 150% Direct Loan limits; to name a few.

We had some free time among all this learning, where some of us took a bus trip on Monday afternoon to Castillo San Cristóbal in Old San Juan, which is the biggest fortification built by the Spanish in America. Its construction began in 1634 and took approximately 150 years. WOW.

On the last night of the conference, a reception was held on Palomino Island.  As we awaiting the catamaran to take us to the island, we were treated to some dancing from the Fajardo HS students, pictured here..

To use the words of incoming EASFAA President Tony Erwin (Northeastern Univ), “the success of this conference was no accident. The Committee took on the challenge of our first conference in Puerto Rico in many years and, along with our gracious local hosts from PRASFAA, and the generous support of our vendors, accomplished so much.”

Please join me in congratulating Maribeth Quinn, Conference Chair, as she was awarded the “President’s Recognition for Service to the Association” by outgoing President Brian Lemma.  The award is presented annually at the annual conference and is given at the discretion of the president to recognize service to the Association within a given year by officers, committee chairs, committee members, or others.

I think all of those who attended the conference will agree on its success.  I look forward to the next EASFAA conference in Newport, RI, on May 19-22, 2015 and to our own NJASFAA conference on the Atlantic this fall.

So that this doesn’t turn into too lengthy of blog post (or maybe it already has), I’ll end here, but want to recognize the rest of the conference committee as well:  Suzy Allen (Univ of NH), Jeff Bentley (ASA), Elena Garcia (Caribbean Univ), Eduardo Gonzalez (Sallie Mae), Lou Palefsky (Bank Street College of Education, NY), Melissa Rakes (Delaware Community & Technical College), Wynette Richardson Zuppardi (Brown Univ), Larry Sharp (NJHESAA) and Samantha Veeder (Nazareth College).

  1. I agree with Karen – it was a great conference, both for the sessions and for the scenery. It’s not every day we can have a discussion about financial aid with the palm trees swaying in the breeze.

Kudos to Maribeth, the entire committee and PRASFAA! Well done.
